Do Parentheses Change the Meaning?

Compare $2 + 3 \times 4$ with $(2 + 3) \times 4$.

1. Make a Guess

Do 2+3×42 + 3 \times 4 and (2+3)×4(2 + 3) \times 4 give the same result?

You do not need to finish the arithmetic — just think about which step the parentheses might change.

2. Compare the Two Expressions

Without parentheses, multiplication comes first; with parentheses, whatever is inside them comes first.

2+3×4=142 + 3 \times 4 = 14, but (2+3)×4=20(2 + 3) \times 4 = 20.

3. Choose the Answer

(1 + 4) × 2 等于多少?

4. See the Full Process

Which part of (1+4)×2(1 + 4) \times 2 do you compute first?

First the parentheses: 1+4=51 + 4 = 5. Then 5×2=105 \times 2 = 10.

5. Remember the Rule

When you see parentheses, first work out the expression inside them as a single number.

Parentheses first, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction.

6. Try Another

(3 + 2) \times 5 = \_\_\_

7. One Last Question

(6 - 1) \times 3 = \_\_\_
