6. Describing a car trip from its position graph

A car's position s(t)s(t) (in thousands of feet) rises ever more steeply on [0,1][0,1], rises ever less steeply on [1,2][1,2] to a stop at s=4s=4, stays horizontal on [2,3][2,3], and repeats that rise-brake-stop pattern on later intervals, never backing up. What is the car doing?

7. Where the position increases

For that position graph, on which intervals is s(t)s(t) increasing, and on which is it decreasing?

8. Where the velocity rises and falls

For the same car, the position graph bends upward (concave up) on 0<t<10 \lt t \lt 1, bends downward on 1<t<21 \lt t \lt 2, and is horizontal on 2<t<32 \lt t \lt 3. What does the velocity v(t)=s′(t)v(t) = s'(t) do on these intervals?

9. Computing acceleration from position

An object has position s(t)s(t), velocity v(t)=s′(t)v(t) = s'(t), and acceleration a(t)a(t). Which formula gives a(t)a(t) from ss?

10. Rising velocity forces positive second derivative

If s′s' is increasing on an interval, then s′′>0s'' \gt 0 on that interval.

11. Velocity and acceleration signs together

A car's position function has v(t)>0v(t) \gt 0 and a(t)<0a(t) \lt 0 on some interval. What is the car doing there?

12. Units on a temperature derivative

If a potato's temperature F(t)F(t) is measured in degrees Fahrenheit with tt in minutes, then F′(20)=3.645F'(20) = 3.645 carries units of degrees Fahrenheit per minute.

13. Second derivative by central difference

For a potato's temperature, central differences gave F′(20)≈3.645F'(20) \approx 3.645 and F′(40)≈1.515F'(40) \approx 1.515 degrees per minute. Estimate F′′(30)F''(30) with a central difference, rounded to four decimals, in degrees per minute per minute.

14. Meaning of a second derivative value

For the potato, F(30)=167.6F(30) = 167.6 degrees, F′(30)≈2.065F'(30) \approx 2.065 degrees per minute, and F′′(30)≈−0.1065F''(30) \approx -0.1065. What does the triple of values say about the minute from t=30t = 30 to t=31t = 31?

15. Warming at a decreasing rate

On the interval t=10t = 10 to t=40t = 40, the potato's temperature is increasing at a decreasing rate.

16. Reading position, slope, and bend together

A twice differentiable function satisfies f(2)=−3f(2) = -3, f′(2)=1.5f'(2) = 1.5, and f′′(2)=−0.25f''(2) = -0.25. Near x=2x = 2 the graph of ff is

17. Reasoning from a graph of the derivative

A function gg has a derivative g′g' whose graph is always positive, with g′(2)≈1.4g'(2) \approx 1.4, and g′g' rises and falls in waves, changing direction 99 times on −3<x<3-3 \lt x \lt 3. What follows?

18. Bungee jumper rising rate

A bungee jumper's height satisfies h(4)=55.5h(4) = 55.5 and h(5)=69.8h(5) = 69.8 feet. Estimate h′(4.5)h'(4.5) in feet per second using a central difference over [4,5][4, 5], rounded to one decimal.

19. Matching shapes to slope and bend data

Which everyday shape describes a function that is increasing on −3<x<3-3 \lt x \lt 3, concave up on −3<x<0-3 \lt x \lt 0, and concave down on 0<x<30 \lt x \lt 3?
