MIT 18.01 Final Practice Exam

A course-wide final practice exam: derivatives, graphs and optimization, related rates, differential equations, integrals, series and Taylor expansions.

1. MIT 18.01 Final Practice Exam — how this assessment works

This lesson reproduces the Practice Exam “MIT 18.01 Final Practice Exam” from MIT OpenCourseWare 18.01 Single Variable Calculus (Fall 2006) (https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/18-01-single-variable-calculus-fall-2006/), licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. Work through 19 problems in order: type your reasoning in the answer box or write it on the handwriting pad, then submit for AI grading.

How the grading works Every problem is graded by an AI mathematics teacher that reads the official solution shipped with the course. It checks your work criterion by criterion, awards partial credit for correct steps, and returns written feedback. Equivalent mathematics and valid alternative methods are accepted — a different route to the same result can still earn full marks.

If your answer is incomplete, the feedback names exactly which steps are missing, so you can correct them and try again.

Let f(x)={x2+x+a,x≤0bx+2,x>0f(x)=\begin{cases} x^2+x+a, & x\le 0\\ bx+2, & x>0\end{cases}, aa and bb constants.

Find all values of aa and bb for which f(x)f(x) is differentiable.

6. MIT 18.01 PRFINAL Problem 5 — Falling Christmas tree (related rates) (15 pts)

On a night when the full moon is directly overhead, an outdoor Christmas tree 50 feet high is falling over. Its top is falling at the rate of 2 feet/sec, at the moment when it is 30 feet from the ground. At that moment, how rapidly is the shadow of the tree cast by the moon lengthening?

7. MIT 18.01 PRFINAL Problem 6 — Largest rectangle inscribed under a parabola (15 pts)

Find the area of the largest rectangle whose base lies along the xx-axis and whose top corners lie on the parabola y=1−x2y=1-x^2.

8. MIT 18.01 PRFINAL Problem 7 — Curves whose normal line always passes through $(1,0)$ (15 pts: 4 + 7 + 4)

The graph of y=y(x)y=y(x) has this property: at each point (x,y)(x,y) on the graph, the normal line at that point passes through the fixed point (1,0)(1,0). (The normal is the line perpendicular to the tangent line.)

a) Show that y=y(x)y=y(x) satisfies the differential equation y′=1−xyy'=\dfrac{1-x}{y}.

b) Using separation of variables, find all solutions to the differential equation. You can leave the solutions in implicit form, i.e., as equations connecting xx and yy.

c) Describe the curves which are their graphs. (You may have to use algebraic processes first (like completing the square) in order to change the equations into a form where you know what their graphs look like.)

9. MIT 18.01 PRFINAL Problem 8 — Volume of a wine-glass cup (solid of revolution) (15 pts)

The cup of a wine-glass has the shape formed by rotating the parabola y=x2y=x^2 about the yy-axis; its upper rim is a circle of radius 1. How much wine does it hold?

10. MIT 18.01 PRFINAL Problem 9 — Trapezoidal rule with three subdivisions (10 pts)

Using the trapezoidal rule with three subdivisions (n=3n=3), estimate

∫0π/2sin⁡2x dx.\int_0^{\pi/2}\sin^2x\,dx .

Do the work systematically, making a table of values first.

Between the two towers of a suspension bridge, each of the two main cables has the shape of the parabola
